St. Thomas More Catholic School Students Win Essay Contest
Congratulations to the ten St. Thomas More Catholic School fifth graders who submitted winning essays in the 2014 Sallie Markham Michie Trust Essay Contest: Lauren Fama, Dylan Hickey and Abby Malloy (pictured L to R) came in first place. Nate Remmy, Garrett Beggs and Justin Saenz placed second. Samantha Carew, Emily Spang, Sebastian Hammill and Declan Davis came in third place. The Sallie Markham Michie Essay Contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Magna Carta Dames, is an annual competition in which participants compose essays on historical, governmental, or constitutional topics. The intent of the competition is to challenge students to research and write about historical events and the civic and governmental roles in the development and history of North Carolina and the United States of America. The fifth graders were to pretend that they were Overmountain men who volunteered to fight at the Battle of King’s Mountain on October 7, 1780 and to maintain a diary about their experiences. The essays were judged on adherence to topic, historical accuracy, organization, originality of expression, compliance with form, citation, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. (Thank you to Mrs. Marilyn Stuit and Ms. Angela Blum, St. Thomas More Catholic School’s awesome fifth grade teachers, for their assistance and guidance of this project!)
