On Ash Wednesday, I used a reflection entitled “Sacred Vulnerability” by Loretta Ross-Gotta in my homily. I came across this reflection last Lent, and I have read it often. It speaks so well of our human condition and the need to accept the vulnerability we all have, and how that can indeed be a very sacred thing. Have you ever thought of vulnerability as a sacred thing? But that is precisely where God comes to us the most.
I love, too, the image of prayer as “the long worn rag of human longing waved toward heaven like a tattered flag.” That’s how we feel sometimes, isn’t it? The great thing, though, is that God is there to see that flag and recognize our need for help.
I invite you to take some time as we continue to walk these days of Lent to
read this reflection. Read it a few times. Perhaps make it part of your daily prayer for the rest of Lent.
