Matt Coward grew up in Concord and Hickory, NC, but he has been in Chapel Hill since arriving here as an undergrad at UNC in 1999. He is an Associate Professor of Urology at the UNC School of Medicine and has a medical practice focused in the area of reproductive urology. His maternal grandmother was a devout Catholic, and so was his mother, but he was not baptized and grew up as a non-denominational Christian. His faith developed early with Young Life. In 2006 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensboro, Matt married his wife Melissa who along with her entire extended family are Catholic. Melissa, Matt, and their four children, Caden (9), Ryan (8), Hannah (5), and Eleanor (3), are parishioners of St. Thomas More, and all four children were baptized here. His calling to the Catholic faith has been constant and gradually increasing over many years through family connections and attending church services with his family, but most strongly inspired by his life partner Melissa. He is attracted to the strong traditions of the Catholic faith and looks forward to growing his faith with God by formally joining the Catholic Church so he can continue his spiritual journey with his family.
