Is St. Thomas More doing anything to commemorate the death of Pope Francis?
Yes. There will be a Mass of Remembrance on Monday, April 28 at 5:15PM in the church. This Mass will not be livestreamed. However, the Vatican is currently livestreaming from St. Peter's Basilica; the same livestream link will broadcast the official funeral on Saturday, April 26 at 10AM CEST (4AM EST).
You are also invited to join Catholics across the world and our diocese in praying a nine day novena for the repose of the soul of our Pope. This novena was published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops; it is available in both English and Spanish. The novena starts on Saturday, April 26.
We pray, as a Universal Church, upon the death of Pope Francis Easter Monday, April 21st, 2025. We pray in thanksgiving for his service to the Church, especially as our Holy Father. We pray in Hope during this Jubilee Year of Hope and during this season of the Resurrection. And we pray for the eternal rest of his Immortal Soul, that God is compassionate and merciful to His servant, who He called to lead His Church in the Chair of Saint Peter.
A statement from Bishop Luis on the passing of the Holy Father:
I was blessed to have opportunities to meet with Pope Francis many times and was amazed by his warmth and compassion and sense of humor. I will always be amazed when I recall how he demonstrated that same humility and humanity in every interaction, with every person he met. Please join me in praying for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis and in asking that his spirit continues to bless the Church and its people.
Below are some ways you can pray:
Novendiales(Nine Days of Mourning) At the direction of the College of Cardinals, the novendiales (“nine days”) are customarily observed as official days of mourning in Rome and throughout the Church. These may be observed in different ways in the various Particular Churches. A sample novena has been made available on the USCCB website:
Prayer from the Roman Missal for a deceased pope. O God, immortal shepherd of souls, look on your people’s prayers and grant that your servant Pope Francis, who presided over your Church in charity, may, with the flock entrusted to his care, receive from your mercy the reward of a faithful steward. Amen.
